| CHARAKA OATH |

- Twice born*! Facing the east and in the presence of holy fire and the learned people, take the oath that during the period of your study you shall live a life of self – control, piety and discipline. Submitting yourself to your Guru (teacher), with complete dedicated feeling, you shall act like a son for his welfare and happiness. Your action shall be guarded, service oriented and free from indiscipline and envy. In your dealings you shall be patient, obedient, humble, constantly contemplative and calm. You shall aim your full efforts and ability towards the desired goal of your Guru. As a physician, in order to gain success, and fame and earn money you shall always use your knowledge for the welfare of living people.
- You shall always be ready to help patients, even when you are extremely busy and tired. You shall not harm any patient for the sake of money or selfish gain nor shall you entertain a desire for others’ women or wealth. Immorality should not figure even in your thoughts.
- Your dress ought to be decent yet impressive and personality confidence – inspiring.
- You shall always use sweet, pure, appropriate, pleasant truthful, beneficial and polite words, and using your past experience you shall act keeping in mind the time and the place.
- You shall constantly endeavour to accomplish the newest development of knowledge.
- You shall treat a woman only in the presence of her husband or near relative.
- When examining a patient you discretion, attention and senses should be concentrated on the cure of the disease. You shall not make propaganda about the confidential matters regarding patient or his family.
- Though an authority ( On your subject ), you shall not display your knowledge(and skill) egoistically as this may take even your near ones fell insulted.
- A Brahmin has been called as a “Dwij” which means twice born.
